theory of general relativity（一般相対性理論）

gravitational waves（重力波）とは、物体の重さがspace and time(時空）にゆがみを作り、物体が運動した時、そのゆがみがripples（さざ波）のように、光速で宇宙に伝わる現象です。

gravitational(重力の）は、gravity(重力）の派生語です。

アインシュタインは、一般相対性理論でgravityをthe warping of space and time（時空のゆがみ）だと説明しました。

研究チームは、black holes, one of them 29 times the mass of the sun and the other 36 times the solar mass質量が太陽の29倍と36倍のブラックホール）が、1.3 billion light years from Earth(地球から13億光年）の彼方でcollision（合体）した時に発生した重力波を観測したといいます。

massは「大衆の、大量の」といった意味もありますが、ここでは「質量」です。



astronomy（天文学）のように、astro-は「星」や「宇宙」といった意味の接頭語です。
